Pair of Vintage Mexican Feathercraft Bird Portraits in Hand-Carved Cedar Frames
Not prints. Not paintings. Actual feathers—and far more fabulous for it.
This striking pair of vintage Mexican feathercraft artworks depicts two fantastical tropical birds, each individually composed from carefully layered feathers against a dramatic black ground. Fiery shades of crimson, orange, yellow, and gray form the birds’ crests and sweeping tails, while hand-painted branches, berries, and foliage complete each scene.
Both works are presented under glass in ornate hand-carved cedar frames, giving the pair an especially rich, sculptural presence. The original Cartimex label remains on the reverse and describes Mexico’s centuries-old feathercraft tradition, tracing the art form to pre-Hispanic Michoacán. A second label identifies the pieces as products of Toluca, Mexico.
Sold as a pair because separating them would be a crime against good decorating. Hang them side by side, flank a doorway, or give them enough room to command an entire wall.
Vintage condition with age-related wear to the carved wood frames, glass, paper backings, and interior artwork. The backing paper shows tears and discoloration consistent with age. Please review all photos closely.
