A little folk tale for the wall.
This vintage Japanese wall pocket features a wonderfully theatrical pair of Dutch or European peasant-style figures worked in relief against an ornate caramel-gold lusterware ground. The boy and girl are hand-painted in saturated shades of emerald green, tomato red, pale blue, brown and cream, each carrying a small vessel and looking very committed to the assignment.
The molded body is full of scrolling flourishes and raised detail, giving the piece a decorative, almost Rococo quality, while the open pocket at the top was made to hold fresh flowers, dried stems, or greenery.
The reverse is clearly stamped “Made in Japan,” confirming its origin as Japanese export pottery. Based on the luster glaze, figural decoration and styling, this piece likely dates to the 1930s–1940s.
