A horse with considerably better credentials than most.

This vintage sculptural horse bust was created after a design by noted American sculptor Lawrence Tenney Stevens (1896–1972) for the W.K. Kellogg Arabian Horse Institute in Pomona, California. Rendered in a warm ivory-toned cast material, the stylized Arabian head has the streamlined, almost Art Deco quality associated with Stevens’ Western work.

One side of the base is impressed “W.K. Kellogg Arabian Horse Inst. Pomona Calif.”, while the reverse reads “Lawrence Tenney Stevens Sculptor.”

Stevens was an accomplished American sculptor and 1922 Rome Prize recipient, later becoming particularly known for his depictions of Western animals and his role in the development of what became known as Cowboy High Style.

Of particular note, Stevens created a small head study of the celebrated Arabian stallion *Raseyn at the Kellogg Ranch in 1934. This piece appears closely connected to that history and may be a period reproduction of the Raseyn sculpture.
