A tiny Art Deco jewel for the wall.
Dating to the 1930s, this Japanese lusterware wall pocket was produced by Seiei & Co. and features a vivid hand-painted poppy design against a glossy lavender-blue ground. Bright orange blossoms, graphic black foliage and a dark rim give it that wonderfully dramatic pre-war Japanese lusterware look.
The elongated, pointed silhouette feels unmistakably Art Deco, somewhere between a vase and a piece of wall jewelry. There’s a built-in hanging hole on the reverse, so it can be displayed solo or added to a collection of wall pockets, plates and other objects that have no interest in leaving your walls empty.
The reverse retains the Seiei & Co. “Hand Painted Japan” maker’s mark, featuring the company’s handshake emblem.
